To Movies, Television

Good news everyone! On yesterdays earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that they had locked up a exclusive agreement with Joss Whedon through 2015, which includes both writing and directing the sequel to the $1.5 billion worldwide grossing (yes, that’s billion, with a ‘B’, and that doesn’t include any merch, just ticket sales) Avengers, and that along with that, he’ll also be developing a Marvel based TV show for ABC.

There aren’t any real details as to what they show might entail, but one of the floated ideas is some type of police procedural based in the Avengers movie universe, most likely involving a team of some type from S.H.I.E.L.D. If they can get Cobie Smulders to play the team’s liaison, I would certainly watch that, assuming How I Met Your Mother was actually finished by then. Disney is also trying to develop a series based on The Incredible Hulk with Guillermo del Toro. Whether these two series are distinct or if Whedon will help on it as well isn’t clear.

One thing that is clear is we’ll have to wait at least 3 years until 2015 until we get a new Avengers movie. Disney has already announced dates for several Marvel movies, including Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013), Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014). With those dates in mind, the most likely date for a sequel would be Memorial Day 2015. I know I’ll be there in line at the IMAX with my mask and shield, what about all of you?
