Welcome to Take It Or Leave It, where each week I pick out new comics and tell you if they’re worth the price and you should take them, or if you should just leave them on the shelf.

It’s a pretty light week here at the Take It or Leave It. I only picked up two Avengers books, Avengers #5 and New Avengers #3.

Avengers #5
Creators: Hickman – Kubert – Martin
Marvel Comics

Look, I love Hickman. His work on Fantastic Four is what brought me back into comics. But Mr. Hickman, I’m getting real tired of your shit. Can we for once, just tell a god damn story all at once in a linear fashion? I’m getting tired of these flashbacks and flashforwards and leaving all these breadcrumbs to be picked up 30 issues later and all these other little tricks that are supposed to be cool, but really they are just confusing as hell. These last few origin stories have been boring and kinda pointless, as they don’t have any recognizable progression. I have no idea who any of these people are, and we get whole issues devoted to them? How about we just tell a freaking story already, and then when its appropriate, get a flashback or two? This is Avengers, not Secret Origins, so maybe I dunno, have everyone all together on more than just the last page? The story wasn’t half bad, but I don’t really see how it relates to anything else going on anywhere else on Earth-616. Hopefully the place setting will be finished soon and we can get to real story, but until then, just wait this one out.

Verdict: Leave It

Score: 6/10

New Avengers #3
Creators: Hickman – Epting – Magyar – D’Armata
Marvel Comics

Speaking of not having any connection to the rest of Earth-616, what the hell is going on here? Hickman is writing both Avengers books, you think the two would connect somehow, but no, they don’t. I like the concept of the Illuminati, but the execution is flawed. It’s kinda cool that Beast is forced to take up the mantle of Professor X, but they decided to get together and use the Infinity Gauntlet, and it happens in just a regular issue and it’s no big deal? The Infinity Gauntlet used to be huge! And now you’re telling me Captain America is gonna use it, and he’s gonna use it wrong and break all the gems? Please! The worst offense is towards the end of the book, there are a whole like 4 pages of just solid text and exposition from Cap, it’s just not overly exciting. And when does all this take place? Reed Richards is front and center throughout this story, but over in FF he’s traveling through time and space.

Verdict: Leave It

Score: 7/10
