Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week I help you get to know me a bit better through the magical art of a top five list! This week: Saturday Morning Cartoons.

I’m going to pick shows that I actively woke up early on Saturdays to watch, and shows that were aired predominantly on Saturday mornings only, so that excludes a bunch of picks from my list like Ninja Turtles, Batman, Pokemon, Animaniacs, Eeek! the Cat and Tiny Toons, which all could have made it otherwise.

  1. X-Men – My first real exposure to the X-team, and it was just so totally awesome, the serialization of the first season (much like a good comic book story should be) kept me waking up early for years. Until season 5 when they changed all the writers and animation houses. By then I was sophomore in high school and had outgrown waking up early, and was more interested in sleeping as late as possible.
  2.

  3. The Tick – Sssspppooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnn!!!!
  4.

  5. Garfield and Friends – This show was dumb, but was hugely popular with the kids back in the day. I always enjoyed whenever Binky the crazy clown showed up
  6.

  7. Muppet Babies – Created based on the short musical segment in The Muppets Take Manhattan, this show was everywhere in 80’s. I remember dragging my parent’s to McDonald’s for many a themed happy meal, and begging to get the stuffed christmas toys, which I held onto for much longer than socially acceptable
  8.

  9. Adventures of the Gummi Bears – If only for the theme song. You’re welcome. It’s stuck in your head now. I’ve been known to be the asshole who whenever someone says ‘I have this song stuck in my head’ walks up behind them and just simply says ‘Dashing and daring . . . ‘
