Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week I help you get to know me a little better with the help of a top five list. This weeks category: Science Fiction.

With today being the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness, I’m celebrating with a sci-fi list. Not best series or anything, but best elements from sci-fi.

So I think we all know, I’m kinda a huge Star Trek fan. Rather than just list Star Trek five times, I limited it to just twice, and then went kinda broad.

  1. All the cool stuff in your lifeStar Trek – No other television show in history has had such a broad effect on popular culture than Star Trek has. Almost all the coolest things in your life originated on Star Trek. Your cell phone? A Communicator. Your iPad. A PADD. Your giant flat screen TV? A viewscreen. Everything from floppy disks, to laptops, to SIRI, to medical bio beds and stun guns can all be traced back to Star Trek. If only science could get on that transporter and the replicator, I’d never have to leave the house!
  2.

  3. The HolodeckStar Trek – Speaking of never leaving your house, if you had a holodeck, would you ever? It’s never really addressed on the show besides Barclay’s Holodeck addiction, but the Holdeck has some extremely dark applications. Barclay just used it to escape dealing with people (who are the worst really), but it’s pretty much just a licence to kill and fuck whoever and whenever you want without consequences.
  4.

  5. The ForceStar Wars – If you had both the Force and a Holodeck, would you ever really even need to move?
  6.

  7. Time Travel – Be it by phonebooth, Delorean, or slingshot effect, just the very idea of having the ability to go back and put right what once went wrong is awesome. Sure, we all want to kill Hitler, but we can’t, because that will lead to . . .
  8.

  9. Alternate Realities – It’s nice to think that for every choice that you didn’t make, there is a universe where you did. If your life sucks now, there’s a reality somewhere where it doesn’t.
