Saturday Six – Bigger on the Inside

To Saturday Six

Tardis

Welcome to the Saturday Six, where each week I let you get to know me a bit better with the help of a list. Any idiot can do a Top 5 list, which is why I kicked it up a notch to a Top 6. This week’s topic: Bigger On The Inside

There is a long history of things being bigger on the inside (or smaller on the outside, depending on your point of view) in genre media. Everyone always immediately thinks about the TARDIS, but while it’s probably the best known example, it’s not the only one.

  1. Felix’s Bag of Tricks – I thought that Felix literally kept all kinds of crap in his bag, like anvils and flowers that shoot water when you smell them and other stuff to play tricks on people with, but apparently not so much, as I can’t find one single picture of him pulling anything out of it to corroborate that. I watched a bunch of videos as well, and he mostly just turns the bag into other shapes, like a ladder, table, or a fighter jet. He does release a wave of flying hats from it in the Felix the Cat movie, so I’m gonna allow it because it was the inspiration for this list in the first place.
  2.

  3. Snoopy’s Doghouse – While he prefers to spend most of his time on top of his doghouse, the inside is apparently quite nice. It’s got a pool table, a ping pong table, a staircase and carpeted front hall, a TV, potted plants, a Grandfather clock, a whirlpool tub, a stained glass window, and even an original Van Gogh painting. What a dog need’s with all that, I don’t know, but it certainly all shouldn’t fit.
  4.

  5. Oscar the Grouch’s Trashcan – We’ve seen the inside a few times, but for being a trash can it includes a tremendous amount of stuff. It has a bowling alley, an ice skating rink, a pool, and room for all his pets, which besides his worm Slimey, includes goats, a horse, a dolphin, and a herd of elephants. Yet even with all this stuff inside, people can pick up his can and walk him around, or he can stick his legs out of the bottom and walk himself. He must never skip leg day if he’s strong enough to carry all that around. No wonder he’s so grouchy!
  6.

  7. Professor Farnsworth’s Parabox – Probably the largest item, as it somehow manages to be a box that contains the entire universe that it itself is in.Just don’t sit on it.
  8.

  9. Silent Bob’s Coat – It’s where he keeps those wonderful toys, like his french ticker, inflated blow up sex doll, and his Batman utility belt.
  10.

  11. Holodeck – OK, it’s a fixed size room, but by combining replicators, transporters, tractor beams, and force fields, it gives the illusion of being as large as anything you could want. You could walk in a straight line for hours, but the images would change so that you are actually just walking in circles. It’s a little loopy when you think about it.
