Tournament of Valor Finals

Well, since I don’t have anything to do on Wednesday nights, and the CZW Academy is only 20 minutes from my house, every other week I’ll be attending Dojo Wars, their bi-weekly “House Show”. It’s 5 matches for 5 bucks, how can you go wrong with that? Since the only way to see the show is to be there, and only a very limited number of people can fit in the place, I’ll let you in on all the details with a full results list, pictures and match breakdown.

I missed the last few CZW events becasue I was on the opposite coast at Comikaze. Looks like they did a good job at those shows promoting tonight’s event, as the crowd was almost entirely new faces and only about 3 regulars, coming out to witness the finale of the Tournament of Valor. This lead to a somewhat quiet crowd that didn’t really react or know when to get involved, but the show was still good. Any show that ends in a locker room clearing brawl is always good, right? So let’s hop right to it!

Curt Robinson vs. Dan O’Hare

This was a very short opening bout. Both wrestlers are pretty green, with this being Robinson’s third match and O’Hare’s second. They’ve both been working mostly as refs or security up to this point. They had a contest at the last Dojo Wars, with Robinson picking up the win. I didn’t see it, so I don’t know how this one compares to it, but it was rough to watch and not very exciting. As you can see by both of their singlets, this had an amatuer Greco-Roman feel to it. It mostly consisted of double leg take down attempts and mat wrestling, but even so, somehow Robinson managed to bust himself open and was bleeding from his forehead. The only really big move was the Gutwrench Suplex O’Hare hit to put away Robinson.

Winner: Dan O’Hare
Bell Time: 3:59

Rex Lawless vs. Joe Gacy

For the stature of the two competitors, this was a pretty short match and on awfully early in the night, but it was still good. Lawless had the upper hand through the early part of the fight, but Gacy hit a nice springboard cross body off the second rope. Lawless recovered and threw Gacy to the corner, and hit him with a stomp to the chest from the top turnbuckle. The match ended when Gacy did a handspring into the ropes, caught Lawless in a stunner as he bounced off, then hit a lionsault just for good measure.

Winner: Joe Gacy
Bell Time: 8:10

Sugar Dunkerton vs Mason Miles vs D3 vs Eric Corvis

This was a frenetic, fast paced match, as it was composed of 3 high flyers. . . and Eric Corvis. It started with a bit of racial tension as Corvis called Dunkerton “boy” and said that “we don’t take kindly to your type here in CZW”. He however said that he meant those who wear brightly colored tights, not black people. Corvis failed the ref’s pre match check, as for some reason he had a black magic marker in his coat, which Dunkerton took from him. Most of the match was fought between Corvis and Dunkerton, with D3 and Miles mostly down and outside the ring, but they would jump in once and a while, hit their one move and roll out. Towards the end it got very cluttered, as all 4 men were in the ring and took turns knocking each other down. Everyone was down, then two got up and one knocked the other down, then someone else got up and knocked who was still standing down, then someone else got up and knocked him down, etc., for like 10 different combinations. It finally ended with Dunkerton making a pin attempt, but Corvis ran in and grabbed him, flipping over him, pulling Dunkerton off the pin and into a crucifix for the 1-2-3. Dunkerton was not pleased at this turn of events, and issued an open challenge to Corvis at the next Dojo Wars.

Winner: Eric Corvis
Bell Time: 7:21

Andrew Wolf vs Joey Janela

This was basically an extended squash match, with Janela being a massive heel the entire time and just beating up on Wolf relentlessly. Wolf did manage to get in a few bouts of offense, including a nice Exploder Suplex into the corner and an Axehandle Smash from the top turnbuckle. But just about every time he got the upper hand, Janela would counter with something shady. This went all the way up to faking an ankle injury after missing an attack from the top rope. The ref had the match stopped, Janela had his shoe off and was being carried out by two trainers, when he attacked with a vicious clothesline outside the ring. He then smashed Wolf against the wall several times, and threw his shoe at him. Come on, who throws a shoe? Janela fought the rest of the match with just the one shoe on. Wolf seemed to be headed to the victory, hitting Janela with a Rock Bottom, and then going for the People’s Elbow. It was not to be though, as Janela popped up and hit a clothesline before Wolf could drop the elbow, and covered him for the win.

Winner: Joey Janela

Brittany Blake, Frankie Pickard, and Persistent Percy vs Jonathan Evans, Ben Ortiz, and Trooper Audubon

This was apparently the night everyone decided to get new pants or try new gimmicks, as Brittany and Percy came out in fancy new pants, and Evans for some reason came out in jeans and a hoodie like Dean Ambrose, and spent the whole time licking his lips and shaking his head, and just all around being creepier than he normally is. The main focus in this match was between Audubon and Pikard, after Trooper called Pikard “boy” (a running theme with the members of The Front tonight apparently), and said that in these large tag matches they always end up pitted against each other. This lead to them taking turns slapping each other hard in the face for like 6 or 7 times until they just started brawling. The match then broke down, with everyone in the ring at once. It came to an end when Ortiz tried to spear Brittany while Audubon was holding her against the ropes, but she got out of the way, grabbed Evans, hit Stratisfaction, and then Percy hit a slash on Evans off the top rope to seal the victory.

Winner: Brittany Blake, Frankie Pickard, and Persistent Percy

Ryan Galeone vs. Conor Claxton

Part of me thought that there was a possibility that Galeone could win this. He certainly has a much better physique than Claxton, and he won all his tournament matches decisively 2-0. Claxton however has been steadily improving since the first Dojo Wars and his battles with Pikard, so it shouldn’t come as too big a surprise that he was able to bear through a much larger challenger to come out on top here.

  • Ryan Galeone pinned Conor Claxton after a kick to the head (4:45)
  • Conor Claxton pinned Ryan Galeone with a roll over crucifix (9:17)
  • Conor Claxton forced Ryan Galeone to submit to the cross armbar after rolling through a powerbomb attempt (17:52)

Winner: Conor Claxton

Post Match

No, the surprise was that while Claxton was being given the Medal of Valor and his oversized $5000 check, the members of The Front came out to watch. Sozio then entered the ring to congratulate Conor on how he managed to beat such a bigger man, and that maybe the better man didn’t win tonight. Claxton pointed out that not only did he pin Galeon 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring, he also forced him to tap out. It was here that Galeone kicked Claxton in the head yet again, and Sozio revealed that the “private sponsor” of the Tournament of Valor had been The Front all along, and that Galeone was their newest member. I knew something was fishy when Drew Gulak wouldn’t tell me who the sponsor was! At this point the rest of the locker room ran in to protect Claxton, and it looked like we were gonna have a rumble. But before any punches could be thrown, Sozio lead The Front out of the ring and into the back. With the heels vanquished, Claxton and the faces stood victorious and celebrated in the ring.
