Saturday Six – Best Trios

Three's Company

Welcome to the Saturday Six, where each week I let you get to know me a bit better with the help of a list. Any idiot can do a Top 5 list, which is why I kicked it up a notch to a Top 6. This week’s topic: Best Trios

This weekend I’ll be attending three days of 3 on 3 tag team wrestling at Chikara’s King of Trios. That’s a whole lot of threes, so I figured I’d run down a list of some of my favorite three man teams that weren’t all entirely wrestling related.

  1. Kirk / Spock / McCoy – Star Trek – A classic example of the Freudian Trio of Id, Ego, and Superego. Spock was the coldly logical, passionless, reasonable Superego. McCoy was the instinctively emotional, compassionate Id. And of course Kirk the the perfect balance of the two: the strong, practical, heroic Ego.
  2.

  3. Brendon / Jason / Melissa – Home Movies – I just love this show, and while Brendon was nominally the star (minus all of Coach McGuirk’s awesomeness), pretty much every episode had some type of craziness that involved all three kids equally, while being totally hilarious.
  4.

  5. Batman / Superman / Wonder Woman – The power trio around which pretty much the entirety of the DC Universe revolves. Sure, Green Lantern is more powerful than all of them put together, but they have their own series called Trinity.
  6.

  7. Green Day – There are many great Three Man Bands: Blink 182, The Police, Nirvana, Genesis, ZZ Top, The Presidents of the United States of America. The one that always stuck out to me was Green Day. Maybe it was just because I was of the right age at the right time to become a huge fan, or maybe they are one of the few three pieces where it didn’t seem like one guy and his two backups. Each member, Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt, all had their time in the sun. In fact, Mike Dirnt is probably the only bassist I can name besides Metallica’s late Cliff Burton.
  8.

  9. Fabulous Freebirds – While they may not be as awesome as The Shield or Demolition, their place in wrestling history gets them the nod here. They introduced the idea of rock entrance music, and they are the namesake of the “Freebird rule”, wherein a tag team with 3 or more members can have any two participate in a given match, which was a radical concept when introduced, and is a great way to keep opponents on their toes.
  10.

  11. Three Musketeers – If we were on the Family Feud, and the question was something like “Give me a word that might complete the phrase ‘The Three…'”, my top three answers would be Musketeers, Amigos, and Stooges, in that order. Upon further review, it appears they actually did ask that once, with the board being Stooges and Musketeers tied for first, then Little Pigs, Bears, Blind Mice, and Wise Men, with not an Amigo to be seen. I guess those 100 people were not fans of Chevy Chase, Steve Marin, and Martin Short, or it was a Richard Dawson episode. I still stand by my pick, if only because the 90’s movie version with Charlie Sheen, Chris O’Donnell, Kiefer Sutherland, and Tim Curry is an absolute trainwreck.
