Friday Five – Comics
You’ll probably notice a definitive pattern. I like big events, and a certain kind in particular. I’ve limited this down to things I’ve personally read or own, so no Dark Phoenix Saga (though the X-Men cartoon of it was awesome) or like Showcase #22 or Detective #27.
- The Whole Death of Superman/Funeral For a Friend/Reign of the Supermen story arc, particularly Superman #75 – The storyline that really got me hooked on comics as a kid. I waited at my local comic book store all day on April 15, 1993 for Adventures of Superman #500 to come out.
- Knightfall/Knightquest/KnightsEnd, particularly Batman #497 – Two massive storylines going on at once. I’ve never read the whole overall arc, just having filled in my missing KnightQuest/KnightsEnd issues, was too into the Superman death at the time to buy them all, but come on, Batman gets his damn back broken? That’s crazy! (Ignoring Bane in Batman Forever, of course)
- Avengers Disassembled/House of M/Decimation, particularly House of M #7 – Three simple words: “No More Mutants”.
- Emerald Twilight, particularly Green Lantern #50 – This was Hal’s swansong, and while we wouldn’t be seeing him back in form for a long time (I loathe Kyle Rayner), there is no more badass way to go out than an insane Hal Jordan just beating the everloving hell out of Sinestro while wearing like 30 Green Lantern Rings.
- Hickman’s run of Fantastic Four, particularly Fantastic Four #587 & 588 – These are what brought me back to comic books after a near 15 year absence. Johnny’s death was truly moving and one fit for a hero, and the follow up issue, which contained no dialog, was a perfect example of the comic book medium at its best and if you’ll excuse me, I must have something in my eye.
