cyber force reimagining - issue 1 cover art

OK, so it isn’t entirely free. There is a catch.

It’s been nearly 20 years since the first issue of Cyber Force, one of Image Comics’ launch titles, and over 6 years since its last ongoing series was cancelled. Now, for it’s 20th anniversary, Image and Top Cow Studios are planning a new re-imagining of the series, and they are doing it in a way that’s never been done before. They plan on giving away the first five issues, totally free, both digitally and in print.

But of course, nothing is really free, so someone has to pay. Image and Top Cow have came up with a novel solution to this, after seeing it work so well before, in cases like The Ouya and Grimm Fairy Tales. To raise the money to give away all these free issues, they are running a Kickstarter campaign, with a goal of $75000 in the next 30 days. It’s been live for only a day and it’s already up to $15000. There are a bunch of pretty sweet swag for low contribution levels, which are pretty analogous to just paying for the issues, but have the added bonus of helping them give them away to everyone else. So be a good person, if you got a few extra dollars, help your fellow nerds get something for free, while getting yourself some awesome one of a kind bonuses.

Original Cyber Force creator and writer Marc Silvestri is returning to the series as the co-writer, art director, and cover artist as part of the reboot. He’ll be joined by interior artist Khoi Pham. Co-writer and Top Cow President Matt Hawkins will serve as the other co-writer. Rounding out the team will be master colorist Sunny Gho and letterer Troy Peteri.

Sounds pretty cool all around to me. I never really read the series back in the 90’s, but I was a aware of it, and am a big fan of Silvestri’s artwork, so I’ll be sure to pick these up. So be sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign page for more details

Image also has all kinds of other crazy stuff planed for their 20th anniversary, so stay turned for more updates.
