Friday Five – Guilty Pleasure Movies

To Friday Five, Movies

Over the top

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week I help you get to know me a bit better with the help of a top 5 list! This week’s category: Guilty Pleasure Movies.

I generally like to think of myself as having a very refined palate when it comes to movies, being able to spot the crappy ones from a mile away. But sometimes, I just can’t help but to love a polished turd of a film.

  1. Adventureland – Wow, it stars Kristen Stewart AND Ryan Reynolds? Count me in! But seriously, I only like it for its accurate portrayal of ride operators. The summer I spent doing it was pretty much just like the movie.
  2.

  3. Howard The Duck – I know it’s one of the biggest bombs of all time, but I just can’t help but love it. Something about Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones, and Lea Thompson talking to a midget in a duck costume is just hilarious to me.
  4.

  5. Over The Top – I realize the writing is simply atrocious and doesn’t really make sense, as Stallone’s character is called 3 separate names throughout the movie, and that Daniel Mendenhall is an annoying and unlikeable little shit. But those kick ass 80’s montages and Winner Takes it All turn the whole thing around for me.
  6.

  7. Trojan War – Will Friedle can’t act his way out a paper bag in this direct to VHS crapfest. But I just can’t help but like it for how adorable Jennifer Love Hewitt is in it.
  8.

  9. She’s All That – It’s totally cool that I have the theatrical one sheet for this hanging up in my bedroom, right? OK, so Freddie Prinze Jr. acts like a stiff board in this, but again, it’s the female lead that saves this, in one Rachael Leigh Cook.
