To Friday Five, Movies

Rom Coms and Chick Flicks
Welcome the the Friday Five! Each week I help you get to know me a bit better with the help of a Top Five list. This week’s category: Chick Flicks and Romantic Comedies.

So yesterday was Valentine’s Day, so I guess today would be a good day to put my vast knowledge of Chick Flicks to good use. I’m comfortable enough in my masculinity to say that yes, I love me a good Romantic Comedy. So what? Wanna fight about it?

Alot of these ended up on my Desert Island Movie list or I’ve mentioned them before, but screw it, I’m gonna use them again. Also, I’m not using my first choice of The Terminator, though it’s totally a time crossed romance when you think about it.

  1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – A trippy rom com that shows no matter how much we may wish to forget certain people, it’s those memories of them that make us who we are, and though painful, they are worth keeping (the memories, not the people)
  2.

  3. Love Actually – If only for a pre Walking Dead Andrew Lincoln being decidedly non badass and extremely British. And the gratuitous cameos of hot American women in a British film (Ivana Milicevic, January Jones, Elisha Cuthbert, and Shannon Elizabeth)
  4.

  5. She’s All That – I know it’s a remake of My Fair lady, but I really love Rachael Leigh Cook for some reason. Her smile in the final frame is just infectious.
  6.

  7. Playing By Heart – A great ensemble rom com, with a tremendous cast of almost everyone who was anyone in 1998, including Ryan Phillippe, Angelina Jolie, Gillian Anderson, Jon Stewart, Jay Mohr, Anthony Edwards, Madeline Stowe, Dennis Quaid, Kelly Waymire, and even Sir Sean Connery!
  8.

  9. The Wedding Singer – Who doesn’t love the 80’s? This one is personal, as it was the first movie me and my ex-girlfriend saw on what would become our first date. I had always imagined proposing by teaching myself to play the guitar and singing the song Adam Sandler sings in the end on the plane. I’ll still keep that in my back pocket, since my other idea is no longer possible (right when Jaws pops out of the water on the Universal Tour. I wonder how many people actually did that? If you worked at Universal and have numbers, please let me know.). Also: Billy Idol.

It was very hard for me to narrow this down to just five, as I love shitty teenage romance comedies from the late 90’s. There were several entries all in contention for #5 that just barely missed out on being included. They include: Never Been Kissed, Can’t Hardly Wait, Mallrats, Angus, American Pie 2, Trojan War, Loser, Boys and Girls & Serendipity.
