To Games You (Probably) Should Have Played

The Console Wars are in full swing. To celebrate, I’m taking this time to go back and pick the best games of all the previous generations that I think You (Probably) Should Have Played, one letter at a time.

Check out all the other entries in the Games You (Probably) Should Have Played series if you haven’t already.

Total Annihilation (PC – 1997)
A RTS game is a RTS game, and while this may not be as well known as say a WarCraft or Command and Conquer, it’s much better. It took some novel approaches to standard RTS features which made it really fun to play. Your resources accumulate at a steady rate and are limitless, but different units build structures at different rates. Each army has a super-unit commander that builds extremely fast and has powerful attacks, but if killed you lost the game. This was also the first RTS to use a radar to show enemies on the minimap as they approached, which could see through the cloud of war. They also included radar jammers, which lead to all kinds of interesting gameplay strategies. You could also queue up your builders/buildings with up to 9 tasks to run through and construct, so you could spend less time micromanaging and more time kicking ass. All in all, it was a great RTS game, and was great fun to play multiplayer, assuming you had enough RAM to run the map.
