To Take It Or Leave It

Welcome to Take It Or Leave It, where each week I pick out new comics and tell you if they’re worth the price and you should take them, or if you should just leave them on the shelf.

It’s been quite a while since I did one of these, but hopefully I can start doing them more regularly. I pick things back up this week with two number ones, Original Sin #1 and Chaos #1

Original Sin #1

I can’t say I’m happy that The Watcher is dead, especially since he just conceived a baby over in FF. I’ve always been a big Fantastic Four fan, which lead me to The Watcher and What If? I’m also none too happy to be roped into another epic summer crossover, but this one gets me right in my wheelhouse. A cosmic murder mystery sounds very intriguing, and this issue does a great job of establishing the hook and doing all the setup work in a way that leaves me wanting to stick around to get some answers. It certainly looks to be better than Infinity last year, which I never even finished it got so boring. Fortunately Hickman is nowhere near this, so it looks like it’s got a great deal of potential. I’ll just stick to the main series this time, the tie ins always seem perfunctory at best in these crossovers.

Verdict: Take It

Chaos #1

I have a great deal of comics from the original run of Chaos, being a big fan of Lady Death art, but I never really read them. One problem with this Dynamite relaunch is that, for a variety of legal reasons, the core of the original Chaos universe, Lady Death, is owned by another company and won’t be making any appearances here. So that means the all the heavy lifting here is going to be done by Purgatori, Chasity, and Evil Ernie. Since I didn’t really read any of Chaos the first time, I really have no idea what they hell was going on and who was who. But Mirka Andolfo’s art was pleasant enough to look at. If you were already a fan of Chaos the first time around, you’ll probably like this. But if you aren’t, you may want to wait a few issues to jump on until all the table setting is done and they get into more action.

Verdict: Probably Leave It
