Today Haim Saban, head of Saban Brands, revealed that he is teaming up with Lionsgate Studios to develop a brand new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film. No, this is not a repeat from 1995 or 1997.

“They [Lionsgate] have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent,” Saban said. “In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”

They’re no real details beyond that, so it isn’t clear if this may be a spinoff from the current series, Power Rangers Super Megaforce, or if it is some type of reimagining of the original series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, contemporized for the modern audience, or a totally new team of Rangers. So long as it’s better than when they did the remaster of all the effects for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers a few years ago by adding in more sparkles and fart sounds, this should be good. Power Rangers has been running strong in some form for the past 20 years. It appears they are attempting to turn this into a new film franchise, which can’t be a bad thing if it succeeds. What that would mean for the yearly TV series remains to seen. No word on if there will be any throughline with the past series, but I would bet on Jason David Frank being it in some capacity. The dude seems to be everywhere.

Now if they could just start airing new episodes of Power Rangers Super Megaforce, I’m eagerly awaiting the super battle with every ranger ever and its been reruns for like two months now. I’ve been waking up early on Saturdays for nothing!
