Nintendo Gets Hit by Major Financial Loss

After recently releasing their numbers for this last financial year, it seems like Nintendo is on the decline. . . a $457 million decline, to be precise.

While the 3DS is still doing surprisingly well given the way things are these days, it’s nowhere near enough to make up for the Wii U’s situation. Still, neither of them are selling near expectations, and the games are only barely hitting those expectations on the 3DS side. Nintendo has plans in place to improve this, but their strategy sounds somewhat questionable at best. Those plans include putting more original DS games on the Wii U’s “Virtual Console”, and releasing more software to take advantage of the Gamepad’s technology, along with giving the 3DS more “key titles.”

I must admit, I feel like their minds are in the wrong place on both ends. As unfortunate as this report is, it also really isn’t much of a surprise. The marketing on these platforms has been nothing short of awful, especially for the Wii U. Like I mentioned earlier, the fact that the 3DS is doing well at all is fantastic, especially considering that the mobile market for gaming dedicated machines has been declining for a long time now thanks to phones and tablets getting more and more powerful by the year. More key titles never hurt anyone of course, but I feel that it would see a fair amount of improvement just by pushing harder in the advertising department. The Wii U on the other hand is in desperate need of both of those things. Considering the fact that the system has less than a handful of titles worth getting it for after being on the market for this long, along with the practically nonexistent advertising, it’s easy to see where the failure is coming from.

Even though none of this comes as a surprise to me, I truly hope Nintendo manages to get it together and get out of this hole. A game industry without Nintendo just wouldn’t be the same, and not in the right ways. That being said, where are the Nintendo fans at here? Any proud Wii U owners with something to add to this? If you’ve been holding out on getting one of the current Nintendo platforms, why?
