Friday Five – Boss Fights
Welcome to the Friday Five, where each week I help you get to know me a little better with a little help from a Top Five list! This week’s Topic: Favorite Boss Fights.
A good game should culminate in an epic final showdown. You just spent your whole playtime defeating armies of no named enemies, and now it’s time to finally come face to face with the leader of their evil machinations.
I haven’t actually played a lot of games you can “beat”. Well, at least not to completion. I kinda suck at video games.
- Sephiroth final battle – Final Fantasy VII – A battle that is impossible to lose (even if you don’t attack him first, you will counter attack with Omnislash, even if you never learned it).
- Dr Wily final battle – Mega Man 3 – I wouldn’t exactly call it a “favorite”, but I always found it odd that the only use for top spin is defeating Dr. Wily’s final form, Gamma. (Actually, it looks like upon further research there were other boss enemies that were vulnerable to it (Shadow Man, Doc Robot), but no regular enemies)
- Emerald Weapon – Final Fantasy VII – Not a true boss persay, as it’s completely optional. I however spent a good 4 days straight making attempts at this. I didn’t have/know about the underwater materia which removed the time limit, so I did it legitimately. I had all my party members equip mime and counter, then had one W-Summon KOTR twice, and then had everyone else mime that until I needed to heal. It took a while to get the pattern down and some level grinding, but I was able to beat it with about 12 seconds to spare, after many tries coming in at like 22 minutes. It takes about 1:15 to cast KOTR once, and if you can time it just right you should get 15 full summons in. I then went and told my friend about my strategy, to which he replied “Oh yeah, I used Cait Sith’s limit break, got a Game Over, and killed it instantly”. I’m still pissed about that to this day.
- Mike Tyson – Mike Tyson’s Punch Out – My roommate in college bought a Power Glove and Punch Out on ebay, but without the instruction manual, so we couldn’t program it correctly. While you could use it to play Punch Out, it wasn’t like how you would expect, by actually punching. You would throw a left or right jab depending on which way you turned your wrist. And we never figured out how to do the star punch. Regardless, it was always fun as hell. I only fought my way up to him a few times, and then got my ass handed to me nearly instantly, but apparently you can actually win against him.
- Magneto – X-men Arcade – Hahahah X-Chicken’s, Welcome to Die!
The unloseable battle
