To Games You (Probably) Should Have Played

The Console Wars are in full swing. To celebrate, I’m taking this time to go back and pick the best games of all the previous generations that I think You (Probably) Should Have Played, one letter at a time.

Check out all the other entries in the Games You (Probably) Should Have Played series if you haven’t already.

Night Trap (Sega CD – 1992)
This is another one of my picks that’s a crappy game in and of itself, but you should play for the history of it. This was a launch title for the Sega CD. It’s just a series of low res FMV’s of some co-eds (one of whom was played by Dana Plato of Diff’rent Strokes fame right before she killed herself) having a slumber party while you watch the house they are in through hidden camera feeds while trying to set traps to capture vampires trying to invade the house, hence the title. The game was cited as an example of violence and sex in video games during Congressional hearings. It was called “shameful”, “ultra-violent”, “sick”, “disgusting”, and encouraging an “effort to trap and kill women” by Congresspeople. All of these were pretty much untrue, as the worst thing about the game is you see Dana Plato in a nightgown, and you trap the vampires, not women. All this ruckus in Congress led to the game being pulled from Toys R Us and F.A.O. Schwartz, and lead to it being one of the games (along with Mortal Kombat, Doom, and Lethal Enforcers) that were cited as being the reasons for the formation of the ESRB rating system.
