Do you wanna buy some Original Marvel Animation Cels?

There once was a time that you may not remember if are younger. A time when cartoons weren’t made on a computer using Flash or Maya, like the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Nickelodeon. Instead they were made by a team of Koreans, by hand, drawing hundreds of thousands of pictures by hand, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the 80’s. When you think about it, it really is insane the amount of work that goes into making a 22 minute animated cartoon for a weekly series. In fact, some would consider each individual drawing a work of art. Usually these pieces of artwork would just get trashed, or stashed away in a warehouse to be used as stock footage later and never be seen by the public. But now, if you’re the lucky bidder, you can get your hands on some original Animation Cels from the many Marvel animated series from the 90’s: X-Men; Incredible Hulk; Iron Man; and Fantastic Four.

Profiles In History, an auction house specializing in Hollywood memorabilia, is holding an internet auction of Marvel cels this Saturday, December 1, starting at 2 PM EDT. Up for bids is over 500 individual cels (and background art) from various series, with a preponderance of them being from the 5 part X-Men series “The Phoenix Saga”. And the awesome part, aside from just the fact that they are making the cels available for collectors, is that they all are reasonable priced. Each cel has a starting bid of only $100 ($120 after the 20% buyers premium), and aren’t expected to go for more than $300-$400 each. Almost every character that was on the show, even briefly, is represented. If you look through the auction catalog (warning, it’s a huge 120 Meg .pdf), you should be able to find something to pique your interest. Personally, I’d normally be all over this, but I forgot about it until today, and I spent a ton of money of Black Friday buying comic statues instead. But while it would be nice to have a companion piece to my Meowth production cel, I may be passing. But don’t let that stop you.

Check out Profiles In History’s website, browse though the Auction Catalog, or go over to the auction lot list to register to bid. And If you bid against me on Cyclops in his sweet leather jacket, so help me, I will hurt you!

Here’s a random sample of some of the cels up for sale I picked out.
