To Take It Or Leave It

Amazing Spider Man 700
Welcome to Take It Or Leave It, where each week I pick out new comics and tell you if they’re worth the price and you should take them, or if you should just leave them on the shelf.

***SPOILERS***

Well, seeing as this week is the week of Christmas, there’s not a whole lot of new stuff out this week. In fact, there’s pretty much just one book that comes out that’s of any importance, so lets just get right to it. Oh yeah, there be spoilers ahead, so you know, read on with caution. . .

Amazing Spider-Man #700
Now, I’m not a regular reader of the Spider-Man books. The last time I read regularly was around #375, in the Maximum Carnage/Clone Saga years. Even though I haven’t kept up in over 400 issues, I was able to jump right in on this book. All you need to know is Pete and Doc Ock have switched bodies, and that’s about it. Now, when I first heard they were killing off Peter Parker, it sounded really dumb, especially when I learned that he’d be dying in the decrepit, cancer ridden body of Doctor Octopus. That doesn’t sound like a hero’s death at all. Pete deserves so much more. But yet, once I actually read it, I found myself moved to tears, as Pete ends up making one final sacrifice to save his loved ones. I can see now why everyone has been raving about Dan Slott’s writing. However, I will say there are a good deal of comparisons one could make between this issue and The Dark Knight Rises. That’s not a bad thing, getting some Batman in my Spider-Man, but Spider-Man doesn’t really need to be grimm and gritty, or at least Pete never needed to. All around, the main story was really great and moving, and it was interesting to see two great heavyweights, who now know all of each others secrets, battle it out in a real battle of brains on a level playing field, and not so much a battle of brawn. The backups, I didn’t really get too much out of those, but do be sure you read the letter pages for a bunch of answers from “The Man” himself, Stan Lee.

And since we all know no one stays dead in comics except for Uncle Ben (as the other two, Bucky and Jason Todd are back and kicking it now), I’m calling it right now: Pete’s consciousness is still in the Golden Octobot and will get reunited with his body in issue 25 of Superior.

Verdict: Take It
