Forever Red

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top five list.

Staying on this month’s topic, this week I run down my favorite episodes or arcs from the various Power Ranger series. And there’s a lot to choose from, with over 750 episodes so far and counting. None of the newer stuff, as I’ve only seen up though SPD and jumped back on with some of MegaForce

  1. Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers – At the time it was a huge unprecedented idea. No Rangers because they’ve all been turned into children because Master Ville pulled a Superman II and reversed the Earth’s spin or something? Sure it was kinda dumb that the Zeo Crystal shattered into precisely shaped chunks, but it was a major change of status quo. The command center gets blown up, they get a new power set. I was bummed they turned Billy back into an adult so fast, I thought his child actor was particularly good. They were all surprisingly good, but that’s not really saying much compared to the rest of the acting on the show.
  2.

  3. Countdown to Destruction (PRIS) – Zordon sacrifices himself in the culmination of six years worth of stories to rid the universe of evil. I particularly love that the “good” versions of Zedd and Rita are what you would imagine a stereotypical white person to be.
  4.

  5. Forever Red (PRWF) – Seriously, every Red Ranger up to that point? What could be awesomer?
  6.

  7. Shell Shocked (PRIS) – For some god forsaken reason, the Space Rangers team up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yes, this really happened. No, I am not shitting you. However it wasn’t with the good Ninja Turtles, it was with the stupid live action Next Mutation turtles and the forgotten fifth turtle, female Venus de Milo.
  8.

  9. Wild West Rangers (MMPR) – One of the few episodes that involved location shooting, Kimberly somehow gets sent back in time to 1880, and is forced to make her own team of teenagers with attitude with the predecessors of the current team, who look exactly like them even though it’s a 100 years ago! Seriously, why is this such a popular trope? I get that it allows for a single actor to play both roles, but why is it they always have the same last name? Aren’t there any females in the link between ancestor and descendant that may have married out and picked up a new last name?
