Saturday Six – Pop Culture Cats

I’m kind of doing the animal hierarchy backwards, since last week was all about dogs, and this week has gone to the cats. Will next week be about mice? It’s a definite possibility.

I think it’s in the manual that in order to be a nerd, you have to have read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s in the rules. But Douglas Adams did a bunch of other things besides Hitchhiker’s. Today IDW annouced they are bringing one of Adam’s other works, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, to American television, with the pilot to be written by Max Landis, of being John Landis’s son, that time he had a Nerf War Turf War at Comikaze, and Chronicle fame.

Saturday Six – Cartoon Redheads

OK, so last week, I kinda messed up. It’s been pointed to to me that not only is Christina Hendricks not a real redhead, neither is Alyssa Campanella or Emma Stone. 3/6 is not good. So this week I plan to rectify that with a list I can’t possibly screw up, assuming I am not colorblind, and I don’t believe that I am. So this week, it’s limited to cartoon redheads.

The newest wave in The Simpsons Top 25 Greatest Guest Stars figurines allows you to combine your love of The Simpsons with WWE, Magic (non-The Gathering type),or Star Trek. If your current Bret Hart or Spock figures aren’t cartoony enough, or you really wanted to make a Penn and Teller or Stephen King diorama, these just might be for you. I can remember almost all the other appearances in the line, but I had no idea the “Excellence of Execution” was ever on The Simpsons. Or that he parlayed that appearance into voice acting on the Canadian cartoon Jacob Two-Two, based on the popular children’s book series. You learn something new every day! Wave Three should just be hitting shelves now, and with any luck you can still find Waves 1 and 2.

First Official Gotham trailer

Fox just released the first official trailer for this this fall’s new show, Gotham. This actually looks pretty awesome. So long as it doesn’t go like the last Batman TV show, Birds of Prey, which was good but horribly managed by the WB, this ought to be pretty exciting depending on where they put it on the schedule. Check out the full trailer after the jump.

Friday Five – Favorite TV Series Finales

Why is it so hard for a TV show to stick the landing and have a satisfying finale? Endings are tough, and contradictory by nature. It should provide enough closure, yet still be open ended to give the sense that these people have their own lives, and possibilities still await for them in the future. A good conclusion should reward us, the viewer, for choosing to spend our time with the characters of a show and give a meaning to our shared experience. A good finale should show that the people we first saw in the pilot episode have grown and changed, along with us, as we watched them. And most importantly, while it should show that characters changed, don’t change them fundamentally just for change sake. Any changes should be organic, and not an attempt to be clever.
