San Francisco Bay Area composer Dren McDonald is announcing the release of The String Arcade, a recording of classic video game music reimagined for string quartet. The crowdfunded album sells for $9.99 as a digital download from Loudr, iTunes, and other channels. In addition, BandCamp offers a $11.99 CD version and free streaming. All profits will be donated to the Alameda Music Project, a tuition-free afterschool program that provides intensive classical music instruction to underserved children in grades K-5.

Well here’s something I’ve never seen before: an animated trailer for a comic book. I’m all about a follow up to X-Men: Battle of the Atom and love me some Salvador Larocca, so I will definitely be checking this out.

Friday Five – Favorite TV Characters

Friday Five, Television on February 7, 2014 at 1:28 pm by

Last week, I discussed my least favorite TV characters. So, this week I show the other side of that coin, and list the TV characters that I love.

I limited myself to shows currently airing new episodes, because all time favorites would be a very different list.

Not every character on TV can be a real winner. Some are just plain grating and annoying and exist solely to makes things horrible for those characters we do like. Here’s my list of characters that just make their shows worse.

Did you know there was a National Pro Wrestling Day? Neither did I. But there is, and it’s tomorrow. And it’s for a good cause. If you can’t physically make it to the official show in Easton, PA, there is a going to be a “free” live stream on the National Pro Wrestling Day website. I say “free” because they are trying to raise money for a very good cause, the Against Malaria Foundation, to buy and distribute mosquito nets to those at risk for Malaria.

So if you wanna see some Pro Wrestling fun from non-WWE sources like Chikara, CZW, Ring of Honor, and Kaiju Big Battel, featuring the likes of such indie darlings as of Colt Cabana, Maria Kanellis, Drew Gulak, Mike Bennett, & Gavin Loudspeaker, you can check out the feed tomorrow staring at 1 PM Eastern, and if you like what you see, consider donating to their fundraiser. They are already a third of the way towards their goal of $5000, which would buy about 1400 mosquito nets. And if you aren’t from the local Philadelphia area, check for other shows run by your local promotion.

Friday Five – Shows You Can’t Skip

Friday Five, Television on January 24, 2014 at 12:05 pm by

There are just some shows on TV that draw you in no matter what you’re doing. If you are scrolling through channels and see it’s on, you’ll stop and watch, no matter how far along in the episode it is. Here’s my list of shows I will always watch whenever they are on.

Friday Five – Games You Keep Playing

Friday Five, Video Games on January 17, 2014 at 2:11 pm by

Everyone has a set of games they go back to over and over again. Sometimes it’s for the challenge. Sometimes it’s for nostalgia. Some games don’t ever have an ending. Some games have different endings to get. Sometimes games are so impossible you just have to try one more time to get past that one killer stage.

Friday Five – Can’t Skip Movies

Friday Five, Movies on January 10, 2014 at 2:27 pm by

Say you’re scrolling though your channel guide some lazy afternoon with nothing on TV. You head on over to the movie channels and start perusing. Suddenly, a title appears in your guide. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it, whether it just started or is almost finished, you’ll stop what you’re doing and watch these movies any time you come across them.
