Mars Attacks may have gotten all the attention and the big budget movie, but everyone knows the way cooler gruesome Topps card set has always been Dinosaurs Attack. In fact, Tim Burton was originally going to do a film adaptation of Dinosaurs Attack, but Jurassic Park came out, and he didn’t think he could sell a gory dark comedy version of dinosaurs after that, and instead pursued Mars Attacks. Dinosaurs Attack had a surprising deep back story for a card set with only 55 cards that was aimed at children. It involved a bunch of time travel and predestination paradoxes, and dinosaur demons and people making the ultimate sacrifice to save the world, and was supposed to be flushed out even further in a comic book series by Eclipse Comics back in 1991. Unfortunately, that story was never finished and was canceled after just one issue. That is, until now. IDW is going to reprint that one issue, as well as finish the story. I for one, welcome our new dinosaur overlords, as I actually own this issue, and the full card set (including the sticker set!), and have been totally bummed the series was canceled before it was finished since the day I picked it up in some random dollar box. You can read the full press release after the jump, and get nightmares from one of the sickest images ever sold to children, which still gives me goosebumps to this day.

Friday Five – Oh Shit Moments

Friday Five on March 29, 2013 at 2:34 pm by

Sometimes you’re sitting there, watching a tv show or movie, and something happens that makes you jump out of your seat and go “Oh shit son! Shit done just got real!” This week I list my favorite such moments where someone did not literally say “Oh Shit”.

Since I enjoyed their last cover homage in Uncanny Skullkickers, for this week’s Tuesday Preview, I bring you Image Comics’ Savage Skullkickers #1. Actually, it’s Skullkickers #20, welcome to comic book math. You know how things like this go.

Friday Five – Guilty Pleasure Movies

Friday Five, Movies on March 22, 2013 at 3:01 pm by

I generally like to think of myself as having a very refined palate when it comes to movies, being able to spot the crappy ones from a mile away. But sometimes, I just can’t help but to love a polished turd of a film.

Man, everyone sure seems to be enjoying these Adventure Time previews. Well, if that’s what everyone wants, who am I to withhold it from them? So this week I bring you a preview of the new issue of Adventure Time #14 from Boom Studios. In the final issue of the current story arc, Finn and Jake are trapped inside a digital world. . . Who can rescue the heroes?

There are tons of movies out there. No matter how hard you try, there’s no way to watch them all and compromises need to be made. But sometimes there are films that pretty much everyone in your life agrees are good and you should see, but you just never get around to them and are embarrassed that you never get to join in all the conversations about them. Those conversations usually end with “How have you never seen Movie X?”

There aren’t so many singular movies I haven’t seen that are embarrassing, except maybe cinematic classics like Citizen Kane or It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s more groups or genres of movies that I’ve missed out on. The below list is in no real particular order.

Take It Or Leave It – March 13, 2013

Take It Or Leave It on March 15, 2013 at 12:22 pm by

I previewed this book yesterday for the Tuesday Preview, and now here’s my full review for Image Comics’ Trigger Girl 6 #1

For this week’s Tuesday Preview we bring you Image Comic’s TriggerGirl 6 #1, by Jimmy Palmiotti (who has been killing it over in DC’s Ame-Comi Girls). Who is the deadly assassin Triggergirl 6 and why was she sent out on a mission to kill the president of the United States? Who is behind her creation and what is their end game? All these questions are answered as this unforgettable epic is collected for the first time, with bonus sketch pages featuring the art of award-winning illustrator Phil Noto.
